If These Walls Could Talk

On Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 July we’re officially opening Live Garden, our new outdoor public garden and performance area, with a special outdoor promenade piece featuring some of our favourite artists and writers celebrating the theatre’s past and present.

The event culminates with a performance of a new song about Live Theatre, its heritage and its future, called If These Walls Could Talk written by Jane Holman. The lyrics for the song are below.

IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK

If these walls could talk,
They’d weave a spell with song and laughter.
With tales of love and loss
And seafarers the morning after.
Living a lush life
By the waters of Tyne
Cooking with Elvis
In Blackberry Time
If these walls could talk
The stories, the stories

If these walls could talk,
There’d be friends and foes and lovers
The Saints go Marching In
Mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers
Ghosts in the darkness
Where the banners still hang
The brass band played Gresford,
And a nightingale sang
If these walls could talk
The stories, the stories, they could tell
If these walls could talk

If these walls could talk
We’d sail away to far off places
Across the space and time
Come distant voices, different faces
Rendezvousing with bandits
Hidden words in the stones
Whispered tales from the backyard
Where they buried the bones
If these walls could talk
The stories, the stories they could tell

Love Live Live Life

If these walls, if these walls, if these walls could
If these walls, if these walls, if these walls could talk
Follow the long line
To the tellers of tales
Take the low street to Broad Chare
Purveyors of ales
If these walls could talk
The stories, the stories they could tell
If these walls could talk

If these walls could talk
They’d say come in and share some magic
There’s laughter when we’re dead
So embrace the inner comi-tragic
There’s no dress rehearsal
If the world’s a stage
Start a new chapter
Write your own page
If these walls could talk
The stories, the stories they could tell
If these walls could talk
